Why Gmail?
Gmail is one of the world's most popular free email services, provided by Google. It works on any device — phone, tablet, or computer — and gives you a generous amount of free storage. Once you have a Gmail account, you can also access other Google services like Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Photos with the same login.
What You'll Need Before You Start
- A smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet access.
- A web browser (like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge) — or the Gmail app on your phone.
- A few minutes of your time.
Step-by-Step: Creating Your Gmail Account
Step 1 — Go to the Gmail Sign-Up Page
Open your browser and type gmail.com into the address bar, then press Enter. Click the blue "Create account" button. If prompted, choose "For my personal use."
Step 2 — Enter Your Name
Type your first name and last name in the boxes provided. Use your real name so friends and family recognise who the email is from.
Step 3 — Choose Your Email Address
You'll need to pick a username — this becomes the part before "@gmail.com". For example, if you choose janedoe, your email will be janedoe@gmail.com.
- Use a combination of your name and numbers if your preferred name is already taken.
- Keep it simple and easy to remember — you'll be sharing this address with people.
- Avoid using personal information like your date of birth in the address.
Step 4 — Create a Strong Password
Your password protects your account. Create one that is:
- At least 8 characters long.
- A mix of letters, numbers, and symbols (e.g. Sunshine#47).
- Not something obvious like your name or "password123".
Write your password down somewhere safe — like a notebook kept at home.
Step 5 — Add a Recovery Phone Number or Email (Recommended)
Google will ask for a phone number or backup email address. This is used to help you get back into your account if you ever forget your password. This step is optional but strongly recommended.
Step 6 — Enter Your Birthday and Gender
Google asks for your date of birth to verify you meet the age requirements and to personalise your experience. Your gender is optional.
Step 7 — Agree to Google's Terms
Read through (or scroll to the bottom of) Google's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click "I agree". Your account will then be created.
Sending Your First Email
- Click the "Compose" button (top left of the Gmail screen).
- In the "To" field, type the email address of the person you want to contact.
- Add a Subject — a short description of what your email is about.
- Type your message in the large white area below.
- Click the blue "Send" button when you're ready.
Tips for New Gmail Users
- Inbox is where new emails arrive.
- Sent shows emails you've sent.
- Spam is where suspicious emails go automatically — check it occasionally in case real emails end up there by mistake.
- Use the search bar at the top to find any email quickly.
Congratulations — you now have your own email address! Share it with friends and family, and you're ready to communicate online.
